East Coast

Follow Sri Lanka’s quieter shoreline. Wide beaches, ocean journeys, coastal villages, and a different rhythm that appears when the island changes seasons.

The Eastern Coast

Where the island changes rhythm

The east coast reveals another side of Sri Lanka. When the seasons shift, this coastline comes alive with calm seas, open horizons, and a slower way of experiencing the island.

Days unfold between quiet beaches, marine encounters, local communities, and landscapes shaped by the ocean.

From the waters of Trincomalee to the bays around Pasikudah and Kalkudah, the east offers space, simplicity, and a connection to a coastline that feels beautifully different.

This is not a place to rush through. It is a place to settle into the rhythm of the sea.

Some journeys are about discovering more. Others are about experiencing differently.

As the southern seas change with the monsoon, Sri Lanka’s eastern coastline enters its best season. Calmer waters, brighter days, and ocean experiences make this the island’s summer coastline.

Signature Sites

Where the east reveals itself

Trincomalee
01The Ancient Harbour

Trincomalee

Harbour City

One of the world"s finest natural deep-water harbours — a bay so vast and so beautiful that every colonial power in Asia fought to hold it. Koneswaram Temple crowns a clifftop above the sea. Fort Frederick stands over the water. The bay itself, at dawn, is extraordinary.

We arrange private access to Koneswaram Temple at sunrise, before the day visitors arrive — a puja ceremony at the cliff edge, the Indian Ocean 100 metres below, the light coming up over the bay.

02The Lagoon Coast

Pasikudah & Kalkudah

May–October Season

The great shallow lagoon bay of the east coast — waist-deep water extending 500 metres from the shore, turquoise, warm, and almost entirely empty. The most beautiful swimming water in Sri Lanka. Available May through October only, when the east coast season opens.

Pasikudah is best experienced from a private villa rather than a resort — we arrange properties with direct lagoon access and private pool so the experience is entirely yours.

Arugam Bay
03The Surf Point

Arugam Bay

World-Class Surf

A world-ranked surf break at the bottom of the east coast — genuine, unpolished, and remarkable. The point break here is one of the finest in Asia. Beyond surfing, the village retains a quality of life and ease that the south coast lost a decade ago.

We arrange private coaching with the best instructors on the point and, for non-surfers, access to the lagoon behind the bay — kayaking through the mangroves at dusk when the birds come in.
