The Art Of Slowing Down

Tea Country

Travel into Sri Lanka’s mist covered hills. A world of emerald landscapes, historic estates, mountain air, and a rhythm that encourages you to slow down.

The High Tea Hills

Where time moves differently

High above the coastline, Sri Lanka reveals another side of itself. The mornings arrive quietly here. Mist moves across tea fields, old estate roads wind through the hills, and life follows a gentler rhythm.

These landscapes carry stories of generations who shaped one of the world’s most celebrated tea regions.

Stay in restored planter bungalows, walk through working estates, meet the people behind the craft, and experience a way of life that has remained connected to the land for centuries.

Tea Country is not simply somewhere you visit. It is somewhere you settle into.

Some journeys are remembered for what you see. Others are remembered for how slowly they allowed you to breathe.

Colonial Estate

The original tea bungalow experience — five colonial bungalows on a single working estate, connected by tea-covered hillsides and served by butlers who have spent their careers perfecting the art of stillness.

Āvara secures the finest bungalow on the estate for each season — and arranges private access to the factory floor during the first flush, when the air is thick with the scent of fresh leaf.

Hatton & the Highlands

19th Century

The heart of Ceylon's tea story. Narrow roads wind through an endless green that has barely changed since the British planters first cleared the jungle in the 1860s. The air is cool, the light is silver, and the landscape is unlike anywhere else on earth.

We arrange private drives through the estate roads at dawn — before the estate workers arrive, when the mist sits in the valley and the tea glitters with dew.

Horton Plains & World's End

UNESCO Heritage

Sri Lanka's most dramatic landscape — a high plateau that ends without warning at a sheer 880-metre drop into the lowland jungle below. At dawn, before the cloud rises, the view extends to the south coast. By 9am it has gone.

Āvara arranges pre-dawn entry with a private naturalist — you reach World's End as the first light strikes the escarpment, entirely alone, before the day-visitors arrive.

Adam's Peak

Sacred Mountain

Sri Lanka's holiest mountain — sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians alike. The pre-dawn climb takes three to four hours. At the summit, as the sun rises, the perfect triangular shadow of the peak falls across the landscape below.

We time the climb precisely for the full moon season, when the mountain is lit by lanterns all the way to the top — one of the most extraordinary sights in South Asia.
