01The Viaduct

Nine Arch Bridge

1921 — Colonial Engineering

The most photographed structure in Sri Lanka — a nine-arch viaduct of hand-cut stone and brick, built without a single bolt of steel. The Kandy-Badulla train passes through cloud and jungle at the precise moment the light turns the arches gold.

A gentle ridge walk above the town that opens onto 360° views of the highland bowl — tea estates, jungle, the Ella Gap, and on clear mornings the faint blue suggestion of the coast far below. The morning light here is extraordinary.

We arrange the sunrise ascent with a private guide who carries a flask of estate tea and knows which ridge to take for the best light — away from the main path, entirely your own.

03The Great Vista

Ella Gap

Natural Landmark

A rupture in the mountain wall through which the southern lowlands are visible — a view that changes completely with the weather, the time of day, and the season. On clear mornings, the coast is a pale line on the horizon. One of the great views of Sri Lanka.

We find the private viewpoints — the terrace of a working estate, the edge of a tea-plucker's path — where the Gap reveals itself without a single other person in sight.

04The Cascade

Ravana Falls

Natural Landmark

A 25-metre cascade named for the demon king of the Rāmāyana — one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, and one of the most beautiful at dawn before the day-visitors arrive. The rock face behind it is ancient, dark green and dripping.

We arrange a private dawn picnic at the base of the falls — before the road opens to traffic, when the water catches the first light and the mist has not yet lifted from the valley.
