Where The Wild Still Wanders

Yala & The Wild South

Enter Sri Lanka’s wilder landscapes. Ancient forests, open plains, quiet coastlines, and moments where nature still decides the rhythm.

The Wilderness

Where nature sets the rhythm

Sri Lanka’s wilderness does not reveal itself all at once. It asks for patience.

A movement in the trees. A footprint on a quiet trail. The sound of elephants moving through the forest before they appear.

Across the island’s southern landscapes, national parks, wetlands, and protected forests create a world where wildlife still moves freely. Search for leopards in Yala, watch elephant gatherings, follow birdlife across lagoons, and return to places where evenings are shaped by the sounds of the wilderness.

This is not about chasing sightings. It is about entering a landscape where you are only a visitor.

The most powerful wildlife moments are rarely planned. They happen when you give nature the time to appear.

Yala National Park
01The Leopard Coast

Yala National Park

Wildlife Reserve

The highest leopard density of any national park on earth. Block One gives private access to the finest game-viewing terrain — leopards, elephants, crocodiles and sloth bears in a landscape of scrub jungle, lagoon and open plain that changes completely between dawn and dusk.

Āvara works exclusively with the finest naturalist guides in Yala — trackers who have spent decades learning the individual leopards by name and know, before dawn, which tree will hold which animal at first light.

Minneriya & Kaudulla

Reservoir Parks

Between August and October, 200 to 400 wild elephants converge at the edge of the ancient Minneriya reservoir as its waters recede — one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth, and one of the least known outside Sri Lanka.

We time visits to the final weeks of the season when the reservoir is at its lowest and the herds are at their densest — and arrange private vehicles that can stay beyond the standard park closing times.

03The Ancient Reserve

Wilpattu National Park

Sri Lanka's Largest Park

Sri Lanka's largest and most ancient protected landscape — a vast wilderness of villus (natural lakes ringed with forest) where leopards and sloth bears move through habitat that has been undisturbed for centuries. Fewer visitors. More space. Longer encounters.

Wilpattu rewards the traveller willing to add a night off the main circuit. We arrange private camps within the park boundary and walking safaris that are not available through standard operators.

04The Boat Safari

Gal Oya National Park

Reservoir Wildlife

The only place on earth where you conduct a safari from a boat — drifting silently across the Senanayake Samudra reservoir while elephant herds swim between jungle islands. An experience that exists nowhere else on the planet.

We treat Gal Oya as a destination in its own right — not an add-on. Two nights at the lodge, two boat safaris, the dawn when the mist is still on the water and the elephants are already in it.
