Kandy & the Highlands

Journey into Sri Lanka’s quieter side. Sacred cities, mist covered mountains, tea country, and landscapes where nature and tradition have moved together for centuries.

The Highlands

Where the island slows down

Beyond the coastline, Sri Lanka changes rhythm. The air becomes cooler, the landscapes softer, and the journey begins to unfold through mountains, forests, and valleys shaped by time.

In Kandy, ancient traditions continue around one of the island’s most sacred places. Further into the hills, tea estates, colonial bungalows, botanical gardens, and quiet walking trails reveal another side of Sri Lanka.

This is a region for slower mornings, scenic journeys, and moments where the landscape becomes part of the experience.

Not every journey is about seeing more. Some are about having the time to truly notice.

The highlands are not a place to rush through. They are a place to slow down.

Temple of the Tooth Relic
01Dalada Maligawa

Temple of the Tooth Relic

16th Century

The most sacred Buddhist shrine in the world — home to the tooth relic of the Buddha himself. The nightly puja ceremony, attended by devotees for over four centuries, remains one of the most affecting experiences in all of Asia.

Āvara arranges early access before the public arrives and positions you at the inner sanctum for the evening puja — an experience entirely different from the crowds.

Kandy Lake
02The Royal Mirror

Kandy Lake

1807 — Last Kandyan King

Built by Sri Wickrama Rajasinha, the last king of Kandy, this still lake at the heart of the sacred city holds the skyline in its reflection. At dawn, before the day arrives, it is one of the most quietly beautiful places in Sri Lanka.

We arrange a dawn walk with a local historian who knows every corner of the lake path — the first light on the water, the birds, the silence before the city wakes.

Royal Botanical Gardens
03Peradeniya

Royal Botanical Gardens

1821 — Colonial Heritage

147 acres of the finest botanical collection in Asia. The avenue of royal palms, the orchid house, the ancient Java fig tree — a place where colonial ambition and natural beauty found perfect alignment.

A private tour with a resident horticulturalist reveals the gardens most visitors never find — the medicinal plant section, the spice walk, the great lawn at golden hour.

Knuckles Mountain Range
04The Cloud Forest

Knuckles Mountain Range

Ancient Formation

Named for its resemblance to a clenched fist when seen from the Kandy Valley, the Knuckles range is Sri Lanka's most biodiverse landscape — cloud forest, endemic species, waterfalls and mist at every turn.

We work with the finest naturalist guides in the range — private treks into areas beyond the marked trails, where the cloud sits on the forest floor and the silence is total.

Adigar's Manor

Gunnepana, Kandy

A Kandyan walauwa built in 1804 by the last chief minister of the kingdom, now a nine-suite manor. Gardens, a pool over the paddy, antiques and the stillness of a house that has absorbed centuries.

Kandy Hills

Immersed in jungle on a private ridge above the Wewelwatte valley. UNESCO listed surrounds, Āyurvedic programmes of genuine depth, and a mountain silence that recalibrates something fundamental.
