Where Kandy feels close, yet distant
Kings Pavilion sits on the slopes above Kandy, lifted just enough to leave the city's noise behind while keeping its heart within easy reach. From the terrace and the pool the sacred city spreads out below, the lake catching the light, the hills folding away beyond. It is a hillside garden retreat more than a grand hotel, and its ease is the point.
Kandy is the cultural centre of the island, home to the Temple of the Tooth and to a living tradition that continues around it, and this is a gentle place from which to enter that world. Days can be full, with the temple, the botanical gardens and the old city all a short drive down the hill, or entirely quiet, spent among the gardens with the valley below. The balance between the two, close to everything yet apart from it, is what makes staying here restful.
Mornings begin on the terrace with the city and the lake laid out below. You drive down for the Temple of the Tooth, the botanical gardens and the old streets, then climb back into the quiet of the hillside for the afternoon. The pool and the gardens fill the warmer hours, and evenings are still, the lights of Kandy gathering in the valley beneath you.
