A Sense of Place

Where Bawa framed the southern sea.

The deep south of Sri Lanka is a coast of headlands, wide bays and small fishing towns, warmer and quieter than the west. Claughton House sits above Kudawella Bay near Dikwella, a Geoffrey Bawa villa set within eight acres of walled gardens on the edge of the hill, its rooms and terraces opening toward the Indian Ocean. Taken for exclusive use, it is a house shaped by its architect’s eye for framing the landscape, where the sea, the garden and the light are drawn inward at every turn.

A Day Here

Days at Claughton House follow the pace of the coast. Mornings open to the sea from the pool terrace at the edge of the hill, afternoons move between the beach below, the gardens and the shade of the verandahs, and evenings are private and unhurried, dinner cooked by the resident team and served where you choose.

The Āvara Perspective

We include Claughton House because it brings Geoffrey Bawa’s architecture to the quieter deep south. Its value lies in the way the house holds the coastline, an exclusive-use villa where design, garden and sea are composed as one, attended as a private home rather than a hotel.
