Set beside the Tangalle coastline, The Last House reflects Geoffrey Bawa’s final architectural vision through open spaces, tropical design and a quiet relationship with the ocean.
Throughout his life, Geoffrey Bawa explored how architecture could belong naturally within Sri Lanka’s landscapes. The Last House represents one of the final expressions of that journey, where walls, gardens and ocean views come together with remarkable simplicity. Designed as a coastal home rather than a conventional retreat, it carries the confidence of an architect who understood when to add and when to leave space.
Days at The Last House follow the rhythm of coastal living. Mornings open slowly between gardens and the sea, afternoons are shaped by quiet spaces and the surrounding coastline, while evenings return to the simplicity of a home designed around place.

We include The Last House because it offers a rare opportunity to experience Sri Lankan architecture from within. Its importance is not scale or grandeur, but the clarity of Bawa’s thinking and the way the house connects daily life with landscape.

The Last House sits on the beach at Nakulugamuwa, near Tangalle on Sri Lanka's deep south coast. It is around three hours from Colombo along the southern expressway, with Mattala airport in the south a shorter drive, and the beaches, lagoons and blue-whale waters of the south all within easy reach.
The house is the whole of it. Taken for exclusive use, it is a place to settle into for a few days with family or friends, the ocean at the door and the architecture shaping the days. Our designers arrange the private transfers, the staffing and the coastal excursions.
