A Sense of Place

Where the highlands meet the horizon.

High above Sri Lanka's southern plains, Thotalagala occupies a remarkable position along the Haputale ridge. Originally built as a planter's bungalow, the house reflects the history of tea country while opening towards one of the island's most dramatic landscapes. Here, mountains, valleys and distant horizons constantly shift with the weather, creating a sense of space that feels unique even among Sri Lanka's central highlands.

A Day Here

Days begin above the clouds before unfolding through tea estates, mountain paths and the landscapes surrounding Haputale. Visit nearby viewpoints, explore the rhythms of estate life or spend quiet hours at the bungalow watching light and weather move across the valleys below.

Location & Access

Haputale

Thotalagala stands on the Haputale ridge at around fourteen hundred metres, on the Dambatenna road above Sri Lanka's southern plains. Haputale is one of the more remote corners of the tea country, roughly six hours by road from Colombo or reached on the hill-country railway, with Mattala airport in the south a shorter drive away.

The setting is the reason to come. Lipton's Seat and the Dambatenne tea factory, where the trade's history is still close at hand, lie just above the bungalow, and the estates and viewpoints of Haputale surround it. Our designers arrange the private transfers, the estate walks and the climb to Lipton's Seat at dawn.
