The Hanthana range rises southwest of Kandy, a line of hills long held in Sri Lankan affection, walked and sung about for generations. W15 Hanthana sits high among them, a restored tea estate bungalow given over to the view. Here the country changes. The heat of the lowlands falls away, mist moves through the forest and the tea, and the city loosens its hold. To arrive is to feel the island tilt upward into its highlands, where distance, elevation and quiet restore a sense of perspective.
Mornings come slowly here, the mountains emerging from mist as the valley fills with light. Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth lie a short drive below, with the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya and the Ceylon Tea Museum nearby on the same road.
Yet the estate is a destination in itself.
